IN THIS LESSON

Discover your personal style and preferences in sewing.

You will experiment with fabric and thread to find your favorite materials.

CREATING A STYLE JOURNAL

Now it's time to explore your personal style. Write down the answers to these questions:

  • What kind of materials are you drawn to? Denim and canvas? Silky and soft? Light or heavy?

  • What are your favorite colors to use when decorating? What about your favorite colors and patterns to wear?

  • What projects are you interested in making?

  • What are your favorite items around the house?

You can also make vision boards, scrapbook pages, or draw pictures to express your style so that you can reference it as you collect supplies and start sewing.

PRACTICE SEWING

In the first lesson, you started to learn how to use your sewing machine, but you weren't focused on making anything in particular. In this lesson, you should continue to sew without trying to follow a pattern or make a specific item. Instead, explore the fabrics you like working with and practice matching fabric and thread together. Once you feel comfortable using your sewing machine for straight, even stitches, move on to the next lesson.

In the next lesson, you will learn about sewing tools and supplies, and start deciding what supplies to purchase based on your personal style and preferences.
